Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive within 6 to 12 months, depending on your age. Approximately 10% of couples in the United States have issues with infertility. Conception is a very complicated process. Fertility issues can be caused by a variety of factors including hormonal issues, ovarian issues, uterine or tubal problems, and semen abnormalities.
If you are experiencing problems with infertility, the first step is to schedule an appointment. A detailed medical history and physical exam will be performed, and we will start a work-up to identify the cause of infertility.
Treatment of infertility depends on the cause. Medication for ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (artificial insemination), uterine surgery for polyps/fibroids, or a combination of these therapies may be used. Sometimes, more advanced therapies such as Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) are necessary. ART are ways to process eggs and sperm to help with conception. We work closely with Reproductive Endocrinologists at multiple Chicago and suburban sites. Sometimes after the initial work-up is done at our office, you will be referred to one of these specialists if your provider feels that this would be the best course of action for you and your partner.
